Content: It was explained that this report was requested in June and was about going back to basics with the School Place Planning process. It was acknowledged that the situation facing schools was now critical and although no one wanted to close schools, it needed to be addressed urgently. The feedback from recent events held with heads and governing bodies was shared as well as a response from the DfE’s Regional Director for the South East. Representatives from the Church of England and Catholic dioceses were present virtually and spoke. The Service Director for Education Access and Inclusion highlighted each of the possible options and noted that each option had strengths and weaknesses. Further discussion took place around place planning areas, the importance of using clear criteria and the communication of this, any potential impact of the proposed devolution, and proposed timelines. RESOLVED THAT the Committee approves commencement of a: i) period of engagement with stakeholders to establish: i. the key principles of the future structure of the school system on the Isle of Wight. ii. the options available to move to such a structure within an appropriate timescale. ii) consultation on the school place planning areas. iii) review of the School Place Planning Strategy.
