Content: Pharmacy Services Consideration was given to the report of the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board (ICB), which provided an update and overview on pharmacy services on the Isle of Wight including statistics on pharmacy first, the use of pharmacies generally and the increasing use of online pharmacies for a growing age range. The committee were advised of a pharmacy closure in Ventnor earlier that day which had taken effect from the previous day, this had been regrettable however necessary, it was a fast moving situation and contingencies had been put in place to ensure provision for residents in the area who relied on the service provided were sufficient. Issues relating to other pharmacies run by the same company were ongoing and the ICB were working with NHS England to manage the situation, details would be provided as soon as possible. Councillor K Love understood the situation and raised concerns regarding the loss of the pharmacy first service which had been undertaken in pharmacies and asked what communication was being put out for residents in areas affected. He was advised that other local pharmacies had taken on additional work to help the situation. This issue had been discussed at high level in government so was being closely monitored. GPs had assisted and continued to provide patients with advice on where to collect prescriptions. There was concern regarding private flu vaccinations and the increasing length of time people had to wait, advice was that more capacity was opening, and they were looking at opening more areas for vaccinations to keep up with demand. Questions were asked regarding online prescription medications and how this was being regulated and supervised, it was noted that concerns had been raised and there had been more regulations in recent years, they were advised to report through the ICB who would pass on the information. A reduction in available prescription drugs was discussed and it was explained that in some instances this was a national issue however where an alternative was available the pharmacist should be able to make a change. Dentistry Consideration was given to the report of the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board (ICB), which provided an update and overview of dentistry and dental services on the Isle of Wight, including the challenges, the current national contract, and the steps taken to work with providers and to improve access to NHS dental care. It was acknowledged that there had been an increase in the number of dental visits on the Island, a new centre had been commissioned which would achieve a 48% increase in the number of units of dental activity. Existing dentists had helped along with a strong partnership with Public Health. A push to encourage young people to become dentists was being undertaken. Questions were asked regarding the number of trained Ukrainian dentists whose qualifications had not been recognised in the UK who may be able to assist with the lack of dentists. It would be taken back, and an answer would be provide to the Committee. It was noted that Looked After Children currently do not have access to a dedicated dentist, which was considered essential. The committee was informed that there is a significant waiting list, and that additional resources are required due to a shortage in dental service provision. ICB Update It was noted that regular meetings were taking place with the Hospice, including talking about whole system provider which had been evidenced by hospices across the UK, an update would be provided to Healthwatch before the end of 2025.
