Purpose:
Content: 9.1 The Economic Policy Officer presented the report which showed the finalised Business and Economy Decarbonisation Routemap for the Economic Development, Skills and Culture Policy Committee’s approval. The Routemap was co-developed in partnership with Sheffield businesses, with significant engagement across Sheffield’s business community. It was designed to act as both a plan for collective action but also a guide for individual businesses to understand their options for reducing their carbon emissions. 9.2 RESOLVED UNANIMOUSLY: That Economic Development, Skills and Culture Policy Committee:- a) Note the significant amount of business engagement that has contributed to the co-production of the Business and Economy Decarbonisation Routemap and put on record its thanks to the businesses involved in the Routemap’s development b) Approve the Business and Economy Decarbonisation Routemap at Appendix 1 of this report. c) Endorse the Sheffield Sustainable Business Network as a key partner in the delivery of the Routemap, particularly relating to business engagement and peer to peer support on decarbonisation d) Note the proposed set of indicators designed to measure the impact of the Routemap and agree for them to be included 9.3 Reasons for Decision 9.3.1 The Business and Economy Decarbonisation Routemap will be an important plan for the city as part of its transition towards a low-carbon economy. The Routemap provides businesses with clear guidance and targeted support to understand how they can contribute to these changes and take meaningful action as part of Sheffield’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Key to the Routemap’s success is the buy-in and support from the business community: the significant engagement that has informed the Routemap’s development creates strong foundations for future success. 9.4 Alternatives Considered and Rejected 9.4.1 Alternative Option 1: Do nothing The 10 Point Plan for Climate Action committed the Council to developing a Business and Economy Routemap. Not fulfilling this commitment, as well as the ambitions set out in the Council Plan, would undermine trust and confidence in the Council’s commitment to achieving net zero. 9.4.2 Alternative Option 2: Develop a Business and Economy Routemap with minimal business engagement This option has previously been considered and was rejected. This was because the plan’s success hinges on Sheffield businesses supporting the plan and seeing its relevance to their future. The best way to ensure this was for businesses to be partners in the development of the plan. This approach takes longer but will have longer-term benefits when it comes to the Routemap’s delivery.
