Purpose:

Content: The Cabinet had before it a report * from the Head of People, Performance and Waste and the Corporate Performance and Improvement Manager providing an update on actions taken to help meet the Council’s statutory duties.   The Cabinet Member for People Development outlined the contents of the report with particular reference to the following:   The draft Single Equality Scheme for 2026/27 was an important document which set out to show that the Council understood its communities and detailed what actions would be taken to improve the lives of residents. Section two of the Single Equality Scheme was the Equality Profile for the region. This provided a significant amount of data and information which included important insights. This fed into the actions that the Council would deliver, articulated through the Equality Objectives. These objectives had been reviewed by officers and Members who attended the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group (EDI) and had been further refined for the year ahead. Reflecting on the Equality Objectives for the last financial year, progress made was provided in the Equality Action Plan Report at Appendix 2.    Discussion took place with regards to:   The opportunities that the Council housing team had with engaging their tenant’s involvement and advised Members that the Council publish a monthly newsletter. The Council to consider an informal allotment scheme to encourage residents to grow their own fruit and vegetables.   RESOLVED that the Single Equality Scheme together with the Equality Objectives for 2026/27 be APPROVED.   As recommended by the Community, People and Equalities Policy Development Group (PDG).   (Proposed by Cllr M Fletcher and seconded by Cllr J Lock)   Reason for Decision: The Single Equality Scheme contributed to the Council complying with the Equality Act (2010). Failure to adopt Equality Objectives or to collect relevant data could lead to the Council being in breach of the Equality Act 2010.   Note: * Report previously circulated.
