Purpose:
Content: Consideration was given to the acquisition of land at Coalburns to deliver woodland creation, support biodiversity, carbon sequestration, climate resilience and public access. The report sought approval in principle for the land purchase, subject to grant funding, and delegation of authority to complete the transaction. RESOLVED – That, having considered a report in the absence of the press and public pursuant to Schedule 12A of the Local Government Act 1972 (as amended), Cabinet: i) Agreed in principle to the Council purchasing the subject property for a price in line with the Council’s valuation, subject to grant funding being confirmed in writing. ii) Cabinet agreed to fund the purchase of the existing woodland and watercourse from existing Council budgets. iii) Cabinet delegated authority to the Strategic Director of Economy, Innovation and Growth and the Strategic Director of Resources and Digital, in consultation with the Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, to agree terms and complete the purchase. iv) Cabinet delegated authority to the Strategic Director of Economy, Innovation and Growth and the Strategic Director of Resources and Digital, in consultation with the Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, to accept the grant from North East Community Forest. The above decision was made for the following reasons: a) To support the Council’s commitment to tree planting and woodland creation targets. b) To contribute to nature recovery and demonstrate compliance with the enhanced Biodiversity Duty.
