Purpose:

Content: 11.1 The Committee considered a report which provided an update on pupil outcomes and wider educational performance in Sheffield, using the most recent nationally published performance data.   The report summarised headline trends across inspection outcomes, pupil characteristics, attendance, exclusions and attainment from Early Years through to secondary education.   It was noted that, while Sheffield continued to perform strongly in relation to inspection outcomes, challenges remained in attendance, exclusions and secondary attainment, particularly for vulnerable groups. Members heard that addressing these challenges would require sustained, system-wide collaboration and a clear focus on inclusion, attendance and the quality of education.   The report highlighted the need to establish a clearer citywide Education Strategy. The Committee was asked to endorse the Local Authority taking a leadership role in developing this strategy, working in partnership with Trust Chief Executive Officers, school leaders and wider civic leaders. It was noted that the strategy would set out shared priorities, strengthen collective accountability and provide a coherent framework for improving outcomes for all children and young people in Sheffield.     11.2 RESOLVED UNANIMOUSLY: That Education, Children and Families Policy Committee:-   a)    Note the current position on pupil outcomes and system trends across Sheffield b)    Acknowledge the areas of strength and the key challenges identified, particularly in attendance, exclusions and secondary attainment c)    Endorse the continued system-wide focus on improving outcomes for vulnerable learners d)    Request a further report setting out progress against these priorities, including attendance, exclusions and attainment, within the next reporting cycle e)    Agree the development with Education Leaders across the system an Education Strategy that will drive improved attainment and inclusion.     11.3 Reasons for Decision     11.3.1 For members to understand the educational landscape of pupil outcomes in Sheffield.     11.3.2 To agree the development with Education Leaders across the system an Education Strategy that will drive improved attainment and inclusion     11.4 Alternatives Considered and Rejected     11.4.1 There were no other alternatives to consider.
