Decision Maker: Joint Strategic Committee

Outcome:

Is Key Decision?: No

Is Callable In?: Yes

Purpose:

Content: Before the Committee was a report by the Chief Governance Officer, copies of which had been circulated to all Members and a copy of which is attached to the signed copy of these minutes as Item 15.   The report before Members informed the Joint Strategic Committee of a Motion which was supported by Worthing Borough Council following a vote at its meeting on 16th December 2025. The Motion titled, Artificial Intelligence in Local Government Ethics, was reproduced (as amended) at Appendix 1.   Members generally supported the principals behind the motion, however, it was felt that there was no current need to create a significant new strategy or programme of works. Much of the work was underway. Capacity and resource was a consideration whenever approving new work streams particularly when there was uncertainty in light of local government reorganisation   It was agreed that the relevant ethical principles continue to be considered though the AI user policy that was being developed and that the wider approach to AI governance be kept under review as technology and the use of it developed. This would include appropriate engagement with staff, unions, residents and elected members where relevant     Decision:   1.    That the ethical principles within the motion be noted and that it be agreed that the relevant ethical principles continue to be considered though the AI user policy that is being developed, and that the wider approach to AI governance be kept under review as technology and the use of it develops. This will include appropriate engagement with staff, unions, residents and elected members where relevant     Call In: The call-in deadline for decisions will be 5.00pm on 18 September 2026.

Date of Decision: September 8, 2026
