Purpose:
Content: (Councillor Baldock made a declaration that he was a holiday let owner) Councillor Ricketts introduced the report that sets out the draft terms of reference of that group in order for it to be formed and begin meeting. There were three options for Cabinet to consider: Option 1 – to adopt the draft Terms of Reference for the Visitor Economy working group to allow the work of this group to progress Option 2 – to amend the draft Terms of Reference for the Visitor Economy working group Option 3 – to not adopt the draft Terms of Reference, not allowing the group to progress further at this point in time The Cabinet discussed the report, and the following points were made: There was a need to review the impact on local communities and existing accommodation providers. Potential to explore establishing a body similar to the Canterbury BID or a harbour board model to focus on Herne Bay's development. Requirement to address the distinct needs of different parts of the district, including villages, seaside towns, and the city of Canterbury. The importance of internal tourism within the district was highlighted, with members noting the role of local residents in sustaining the visitor economy. Accessibility and inclusivity were flagged as key considerations for tourism strategy development. Members proposed learning from other councils with strong visitor economies and incorporating their best practices. It was proposed, seconded and when put to vote RESOLVED That the draft terms of reference are adopted for the Visitor Economy Councillor Working Group. Record of the voting: For (9): Councillors Baldock, Dawkins, Dixey, Charlotte Cornell, Chris Cornell, Hazelton, Nolan, Ricketts and Sole Against: None Abstained: None Reason for the decision: It delivers the views of Cabinet in the role and remit of the working group recommendations. Adoption of the terms of reference will give the working group a clear framework within which to operate
